In a desperate search for safety, 44-year-old Amy Alexandria Gibson fled from her husband, a frantic 911 call logging her terror. Her flight ended in the parking lot of Dawson County Fire Station 7, a place she likely hoped would be a sanctuary. Tragically, it was there that her life was taken on the evening of July 29, 2019. Her husband, Jeremy Wade Gibson, also 44, followed her to the fire station, exited his vehicle, and fired several shots into her car, killing her as their two young children, ages 5 and 8, sat in the backseat.
The shocking act of violence unfolded in the presence of others, including a firefighter and his family who were at the station. After the shooting, Jeremy Gibson surrendered peacefully to the unarmed firefighters on the scene and was subsequently taken into custody when sheriff's deputies arrived. The couple's two children were physically unharmed and were placed in the care of the Division of Family and Children Services.
The investigation that followed revealed a history of domestic turmoil. Friends of Amy Gibson stated that she had lived in fear and had been trying to leave her husband. The couple had been separated, and there had been previous police involvement related to domestic disputes, though Jeremy Gibson had not been arrested for any prior incidents. In the months leading up to her death, both Amy and Jeremy had filed petitions for protective orders against each other, and Amy had filed for divorce.
Jeremy Wade Gibson was arrested and later indicted on a multitude of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children. He has remained in custody at the Dawson County Detention Center since his arrest. In court proceedings, it was argued that the case should be considered for the death penalty. As of early 2023, the case was still moving through the legal system, with a trial date yet to be set.
