In the fading light of Thanksgiving Day in Forest Park, Georgia, a dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 20-year-old Jason Martin. On November 28, 2019, while a group was playing basketball, an argument broke out, drawing the attention of those nearby. The young man, who was not involved in the initial conflict, approached a vehicle where the confrontation was unfolding in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.

The chain of events that followed turned a day of gratitude into one of mourning. A man, later identified as 22-year-old Jalen Leverette, had arrived at the scene and was reportedly brandishing two firearms. As Jason Martin and others tried to intervene, Leverette allegedly opened fire from his black sedan, striking Martin in the neck and chest. A friend rushed Martin to Southern Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal.

In the days following the shooting, law enforcement identified Jalen Leverette as the primary suspect. A manhunt was initiated, and authorities publicly sought information on his whereabouts. On December 2, 2019, Leverette turned himself in to the Clayton County Sheriff's Office and was taken into custody in Cobb County. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping for his alleged role in the death of Jason Martin.
