On the early morning of July 5, 2020, in Atlanta, Georgia, 32-year-old Erica Michelle Robinson was caught in a tragic and senseless act of violence that cut her life short. She had gone to Auburn Avenue to watch the Fourth of July fireworks after leaving work. What began as a festive gathering quickly devolved into chaos when a dispute escalated into a mass shooting, resulting in the death of Robinson and 20-year-old Joshua Ingram, and leaving more than a dozen others wounded.
The
incident was reportedly sparked after a car performing stunts struck a pedestrian, leading to an argument that erupted into gunfire. Robinson was shot in the stomach, the bullet tearing an artery in her small intestine. Despite being described as a 'fighter' by doctors, she succumbed to her injuries following surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital. Her family, who had been unable to join her for a family reunion in Macon that weekend because she had to work, rushed to the hospital after being notified.
In the months following the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department investigated the complex case, releasing surveillance photos of persons of interest to the public. An initial arrest was made, and De'Andre Brown was charged in connection with the shooting. However, in December 2022, the charges against Brown were dropped by the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, which cited insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation continued, and another suspect, Jerry Emile, was arrested. While prosecutors could not determine who fired the fatal shots that killed Robinson and Ingram, they argued that Emile's actions of brandishing and firing a weapon after confronting someone whose vehicle had hit his friend's car instigated the entire ordeal. In December 2025, a jury convicted Jerry Emile of felony murder. He was subsequently sentenced to consecutive life terms plus 65 years in prison for the deaths of Erica Robinson and Joshua Ingram, as well as for other charges related to the mass shooting.
Erica Robinson, a graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and a Verizon employee since 2012, was remembered by her family as a fun-loving person who enjoyed making people smile. In July 2021, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners declared July 5th as 'Erica Michelle Robinson Remembrance Day' to honor her memory. Her family continues to advocate for an end to reckless violence in the city, hoping that others will not have to endure the same pain they have experienced.
