A beloved father and community advocate, Mohammed Abdus-Salaam, was shot and killed on the night of October 7, 2020, in a sudden act of violence outside his Atlanta, Georgia, home. The 42-year-old man, known affectionately as 'Dooly,' was returning to his residence on the 1000 block of Camilla Street SW when the fatal encounter occurred. He was in the midst of a routine task, unloading groceries from his car, when he was ambushed.
According to accounts from the Atlanta Police Department,
four men in a dark-colored sedan, possibly a Nissan or a Kia, approached Abdus-Salaam. At least one of the individuals, all of whom were reported to be wearing hooded sweatshirts, exited the vehicle and opened fire, striking Abdus-Salaam multiple times in the back. The assailants then reportedly rummaged through his vehicle, leading investigators to believe the motive was a carjacking. However, they fled the scene without taking the car. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Abdus-Salaam was pronounced dead from his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath, the community mourned the loss of a man described as a devout Muslim, a loving husband, and a father to two young daughters. Abdus-Salaam was well-regarded for his charitable work, which included organizing regular cookouts to feed the city's homeless population. His family and friends remembered him as a pillar of the community, a man who dedicated his life to service and uplifting others.
Despite the initial investigation and pleas from the family for justice, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests in the case. The four suspects remain unidentified. In the days following the shooting, Abdus-Salaam's family expressed their grief and frustration, questioning why a nearby police security camera was not positioned in a way that could have captured a clearer image of the suspects or their vehicle. A reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death.
