On October 10, 2020, a gathering at a family cookout in Augusta, Georgia, turned tragic, ending the life of 39-year-old Reginald Frank. The male victim was fatally shot during an altercation that erupted at his own home. The incident led to the arrest of Jaron Moore, who was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Frank's death.
The case proceeded to a trial in Richmond County Superior Court, where the central question became whether the shooting was a malicious act or one of
self-defense. Prosecutors argued that Moore, 28 years old at the time, had inserted himself into an argument and, when displeased with the outcome, unjustifiably shot an unarmed Frank four times. The prosecution presented four witnesses who testified that Frank did not have a weapon at the time of the shooting. They contended that Moore was the aggressor, having arrived at the victim's residence with a gun. While a gun belonging to Frank was discovered near his body after the incident, the prosecution maintained that he had not attempted to draw it until after he had already been shot.
In his defense, Moore’s attorney argued that his client acted to protect himself and two women who were allegedly being threatened by Frank. The defense painted a different picture of the events, suggesting that Frank was indeed armed and confrontational. They challenged the credibility of the prosecution's witnesses, pointing to evidence of alcohol at the party which witnesses had initially denied. According to the defense, Moore only intervened after hearing Frank threaten the women and was then confronted by an armed Frank. The defense asserted that Moore was justified in his use of force and did not have a duty to retreat from the perceived threat.
After deliberating for approximately an hour and a half, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. They acquitted Jaron Moore of the murder charges, accepting the argument that he had acted in self-defense. Following the verdict in October 2021, Moore, who had been incarcerated since his arrest the previous year, was ordered to be released.
