Demetrius Daniels, a 26-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on the evening of April 11, 2021, in Columbus, Georgia. He was sitting on a porch in the 4600 block of Reese Road with another man, Rodney Daniels, to whom he was not related, when a black Nissan Altima drove by. An occupant of the vehicle opened fire, discharging approximately 17 rounds.
Demetrius Daniels was struck by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at a local emergency room.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a connection with an altercation that had occurred the previous night at Club Fetish on Armor Road. It was revealed that Rodney Daniels had been involved in the dispute at the nightclub. Law enforcement officials believed the drive-by shooting was an act of retaliation for that incident. Their investigation led them to identify two brothers, Quinton and Johnte Williams, as suspects in the murder of Demetrius Daniels. Quinton Williams, 33 years old at the time, was seen on surveillance footage leaving the nightclub in a black Nissan Altima that matched the description of the vehicle used in the shooting.
Following their arrests, both Quinton and Johnte Williams were charged with the murder of Demetrius Daniels. During court proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence that included the surveillance video from the nightclub, cell phone records that indicated the brothers were in the vicinity of the crime scene, and a social media post made by Quinton Williams that seemed to reference the initial altercation. Despite this, no eyewitnesses directly identified either brother as the shooter. The defense attorneys for the Williams brothers argued that the evidence presented was circumstantial and did not definitively prove their clients' involvement in the crime.
After a trial in Muscogee County Superior Court, a jury found both Quinton and Johnte Williams not guilty of all charges in January 2026. The defense successfully argued that the state had not met the burden of proof required for a conviction. Following his acquittal, it was reported that Johnte Williams remained in custody due to an unrelated fugitive from justice warrant from another county.
