In the summer of 2021, a vibrant young life was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. Kaidan 'Baby K' Barlow-Gardener, a 14-year-old African American boy, was killed on July 3rd of that year. The night he died, a massive brawl involving up to 50 teenagers erupted in the 600 block of McAfee Street. Many of the youths had arrived in the area on scooters, and what began as a large fight escalated into gunfire. When the chaos subsided, Kaidan was found unresponsive, having been shot.
He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Two other teenagers, aged 14 and 15, were also wounded in the shooting.
The Atlanta Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the death of Kaidan. In the course of their inquiries, they identified and arrested two individuals in connection with the fatal shooting. On July 23, 2021, a 16-year-old male, whose name was not publicly released, was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was transported to the Metro Youth Detention Center. Another teenager, 17-year-old Keyontavious Tobias Hood, was detained at the scene for being in possession of a handgun and was subsequently charged with possession of a pistol by a person under the age of 18.
The investigation continued, and on November 26, 2021, authorities announced a second murder arrest. Nineteen-year-old Kentavious Dayquan Jeffries was charged with murder, criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Jeffries was already incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail on unrelated charges when he was served with the new warrants. Police also released video footage of another person of interest they believed was significantly involved in the incident and asked for the public's help in identifying him. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young boy while the legal process for the accused began.
