In the early morning hours of July 5, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the relative quiet of the Five Points MARTA station in downtown Atlanta. On the eastbound platform, 29-year-old DeOntray C. White, a male, was struck by a single gunshot. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, leaving authorities to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter.
The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators.
MARTA police launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. Investigators released surveillance photos to the public showing two men they believed were connected to the killing. One of the men was identified as the suspected shooter, while the other was believed to have driven the two away from the station in a silver Hyundai sedan. The images were circulated with a plea for public assistance in identifying the individuals.
A week after the shooting, on July 12, one of the suspects, 27-year-old Victor Edward Williams Jr., surrendered to authorities. Accompanied by his attorney, Williams turned himself in at the MARTA Police Central Precinct. Authorities did not immediately clarify whether they believed Williams was the gunman or the driver. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Following his surrender, Williams was transferred to the Fulton County Jail. Information regarding the second suspect has not been made publicly available.
