In the early morning hours of January 22, 2022, the life of 47-year-old William Singfield Jr. was tragically cut short in a shooting at a Citgo gas station in southwest Atlanta. A male victim, later identified as Singfield, was discovered by police just before 3:45 a.m. inside one of the shops at the gas station, located in the 3600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the Adamsville neighborhood, suffering from a critical gunshot wound.
Paramedics rushed him to Grady Memorial Hospital, but he ultimately died from his injury.
Homicide detectives began an investigation into the circumstances of the fatal shooting. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect. On February 8, 2022, police arrested 29-year-old D'Quon Hayes without incident. Hayes was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Singfield's death. Investigators had gathered enough evidence at the scene to establish probable cause and secure warrants for his arrest just a day after the shooting.
The arrest of D'Quon Hayes revealed a more extensive criminal history. At the time he was charged with the murder of William Singfield Jr., Hayes was already facing charges for another homicide that occurred in November 2020. In that earlier case, he was indicted on charges of murder and other violent felonies for the shooting death of 45-year-old Terrence Beavers. Court records showed that a judge had placed a judicial hold on the prosecution of the 2020 case, but that hold was lifted following Hayes's second murder arrest.
William Singfield Jr., known to some as 'Hump,' was remembered by his family and friends. He was a father to three children. His family held a celebration of his life on February 1, 2022, and he was laid to rest at Lincoln Cemetery in Atlanta.
