In a heartbreaking turn of events, 9-year-old Kemoni Mack, a young male, lost his life after being shot in a southeast Atlanta apartment on the evening of February 23, 2022. The incident occurred at The Station at Richmond Hill apartment complex. Responding to a 911 call, Atlanta police officers found the young boy, who was then transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a 16-year-old male as the person who pulled
the trigger. In the days following the tragic event, the teenage suspect turned himself in to the authorities. The Atlanta Police Department announced that they had established probable cause to arrest the 16-year-old. He was subsequently charged with a number of serious offenses, including murder in the second degree, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, cruelty to children in the second degree, and possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18. Following his surrender, the teen was taken to a youth detention center.
At the time of the shooting, several other people were present inside the apartment. Kemoni's mother, in her grief, spoke out, advocating for the teenager to be charged with the murder of her son. She described her son as a good kid who had recently made the AB honor roll and had a bright future ahead of him. While the initial phase of the investigation led to an arrest and the filing of charges, further details regarding a trial or conviction have not been made publicly available.
