In what was initially reported as a suicide, the death of 36-year-old Shyanne Bernice Schroeder on March 27, 2022, in Gray, Georgia, was later ruled a homicide, leading to the arrest of her husband. Deputies from the Jones County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call at a residence on Holloman Road where they discovered Schroeder deceased from a gunshot wound to the head.
Although the scene suggested a suicide, responding deputies immediately felt that something was amiss and launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Schroeder's death. Their initial suspicions prompted a deeper look into the case.
The investigation soon focused on Schroeder's husband, Troy Newton Scarborough, a convicted felon. He was first arrested in March 2022 on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and remained in custody as the investigation into his wife's death continued. Following a detailed investigation, which included assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigations, authorities determined that Scarborough was responsible for Schroeder's death.
Subsequently, Troy Newton Scarborough was charged with felony murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond. While a motive has not been officially released, social media posts from Schroeder's account indicated a troubled and tumultuous relationship with her husband.
