In the spring of 2022, a family was irrevocably shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of a young man. On May 3rd, 26-year-old Alphonso Jermine Oliver IV, a male, was shot and killed on Brewer Street in Savannah, Georgia. The news reached his mother, Margaret Taylor, while she was serving overseas, a devastating blow that she would later describe as the worst feeling any parent could endure.
The events leading up to the fatal shooting reportedly began with an altercation earlier in the day. In the aftermath, Oliver was shot 13 times in the back. He succumbed to his injuries the same day, leaving behind a son who his family says carries on his father's spirit and gentle nature. Those who knew him described Oliver as a caring and calm person who would not harm anyone.
More than two years after the tragic loss, the family saw a measure of justice served. In September 2024, a Chatham County jury found Jamal Hicks, 30, guilty of the murder of Alphonso Oliver Jr. The conviction included multiple charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and several firearms offenses. Following the verdict, Hicks was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. For Oliver's family, the legal conclusion brought a sense of peace, though the pain of their loss remains. His mother expressed that while the verdict could not bring her son back, it provided a step toward closure.
