In the predawn hours of Labor Day, September 5, 2022, a night of socializing turned to tragedy in the parking lot of Jack's Bar & Grille in Hartwell, Georgia. Gunfire suddenly erupted, shattering the early morning calm and leaving a scene of chaos and violence. When the shooting ceased, two men lay dead, and at least two other individuals were wounded.
One of the deceased was 24-year-old Joseph Tyrone Johnson of Royston, formerly of Bowman, Georgia.
The hail of bullets not only claimed the lives of Johnson and 39-year-old Roberius Meqwan Thornton, but also caused damage to several vehicles parked at the establishment, which closed its doors permanently a few days after the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Hartwell Police Department in piecing together the events of that fatal morning.
Despite the passage of time, the case has grown cold, a source of ongoing pain for the families of the victims. As of the one-year anniversary of the double homicide, law enforcement officials have publicly stated that the investigation has stalled due to a lack of forthcoming information. Hartwell's Police Chief, a veteran of 35 years, noted the increasing difficulty in solving such cases as people are often hesitant to get involved. Authorities have made repeated pleas to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest, but as of now, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths of Joseph Tyrone Johnson and Roberius Meqwan Thornton. The case officially remains an unsolved double homicide, leaving a community searching for answers and two families waiting for justice.
