The incident occurred at an apartment complex located on B Street, where Bowie was attending a friend's birthday party with his mother. He was sitting in his mother's car when gunfire erupted.
It is believed that Bowie was not the intended target but was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival gangs. After being shot, Bowie was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle, where he was pronounced dead.
Kyan was born on June 14, 2000, in Frederick, Maryland, and later attended Cross Creek High School in Augusta. Described as having a positive personality and a winning smile, he was known for his generosity and willingness to help others. He was a devoted son who often assisted his mother and had aspirations of becoming a CDL driver. He was also employed in the home improvement industry, where he was recognized for his intelligence and commitment to his work.
The investigation into Kyan Michael Bowie's death led to the identification of several suspects. In the months following the shooting, authorities arrested multiple individuals in connection with the murder. Three men, between the ages of 17 and 21, were initially taken into custody. Further investigation led to warrants being issued for two other men, identified as Lawrence Markese Stephens and Jamari K. Williams. Diriuss Redd was arrested and charged with Bowie's murder in November 2022. Lawrence Stephens was later arrested in January. After being on the run for over a year, Jamari Kaliq Williams was apprehended in January 2024 at a motel in McDonough, Georgia.
