On October 31, 2022, a night that should have been filled with festivities, turned into a tragedy for the family of Akquan Li Williams. The 21-year-old Black male from Acworth, Georgia, was attending an event on Bishop Street in northwest Atlanta when his life was cut short. He was an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire of a senseless argument that erupted into gunfire.
The dispute, reportedly over a girl, involved several young men.
As the altercation escalated, shots were fired, and Akquan was struck twice in the chest and once in the stomach. His father, Akil Williams, received a devastating phone call around 12:30 a.m. from one of his son's friends. The pause in the friend's voice told him something was terribly wrong. He rushed to the scene near Atlantic Station, only to find the area blocked off by police.
Initially, law enforcement provided only a vague description of the victim, stating he was a Black male between 20 and 25 years old and likely not from Atlanta. His family, however, was determined that he be remembered as more than just a statistic. They spoke out to ensure his name, Akquan Williams, and his story were known. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend.
The investigation into Akquan's death is ongoing. Despite the passage of time, there have been no arrests made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with his murder. His family and community continue to mourn their loss and await the day that justice is served for Akquan, a young man whose life was tragically taken while simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
