In the early morning hours of Thursday, November 10, 2022, the life of 52-year-old Johnnie Etta Starnes was tragically cut short in Swainsboro, Georgia. Police were dispatched to a residence on Washington Street shortly after midnight following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a distressing scene; Starnes was found lying face down and unconscious next to a car. First responders immediately began CPR, but their efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
Witnesses at the scene quickly informed investigators that a domestic dispute had preceded the fatal shooting. The altercation led to multiple shots being fired, resulting in Starnes's death. The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Kelvin Kirkland, also of Swainsboro, who had fled the scene on foot before law enforcement arrived, and was believed to still be armed. The Swainsboro Police Department utilized an unmanned aircraft to search the vicinity, which aided in locating Kirkland in a wooded area not far from the scene of the crime. He was apprehended by officers approximately 30 minutes after the initial call and taken to the Emanuel County Jail.
Following his arrest, Kelvin Kirkland was charged with malice murder, cruelty to children, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The incident was described by the police department as a tragic outcome of domestic violence. In September 2024, Kirkland negotiated a plea deal, pleading guilty to one count of felony murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. As part of the agreement, the additional charges against him, including malice murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children, were not prosecuted.
