In a tragic and violent end to a domestic dispute on Thanksgiving night, 16-year-old MaKaylah Edwards of Riverdale, Georgia, was killed by her father in a murder-suicide. The events unfolded on November 24, 2022, after Clayton County police were asked to perform a welfare check following a domestic incident in a nearby jurisdiction.
Officers located the vehicle belonging to Ma'Kaylah's father, Lionel Edwards, and a police chase ensued.
The pursuit ended in a cul-de-sac in Riverdale when Lionel Edwards' car crashed into a bush, immobilizing the vehicle. As officers approached the car on foot, they heard multiple gunshots coming from inside.
Upon reaching the vehicle, police discovered Ma'Kaylah in the front seat with multiple gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her father, Lionel Edwards, was also found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
