Burrell Dawkins, a 26-year-old Black male, was serving as the elected marshal of Ocala, Florida, when he was tragically killed on March 1, 1881. Dawkins had been with the Ocala Police Department for 12 years, having been elected as marshal in 1869 during the Reconstruction era. His death occurred while he was attempting to arrest a man named Richard R. Russell in downtown Ocala, near Broadway Street and Magnolia Avenue.
