Charles E. Abbe, a prominent store owner and land developer in Manatee, Florida, met a tragic end on December 24, 1884. His death was the result of a violent ambush orchestrated by members of the Sarasota Assassination Society (SAS), a vigilante group active in the area during the late 19th century.
