William B. Mathis, aged 42, met a tragic end on February 25, 1901, in Mayo, Florida. Mathis, who served as the Sheriff of Lafayette County, was fatally shot while in pursuit of a murder suspect. The incident occurred after the suspect had earlier shot and mortally wounded a naval stores operator in his commissary on the Suwannee River.
