William Henry Dawkins, a 63-year-old white male, met a tragic end on June 15, 1901, in Monticello, Florida. Dawkins, who served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest an escaped convict. The incident occurred when Dawkins entered a house where the suspect was hiding. The suspect, armed with a double-barrel shotgun, shot Dawkins in the stomach, leading to his untimely death.
