Carl Wallace Mertes, a 41-year-old police officer with the North Miami Police Department, tragically lost his life on November 5, 1980. Officer Mertes was on patrol when he responded to a call to back up another officer who was making an arrest at a nearby park around 3 a.m. Upon arrival, the suspect fled, prompting Officer Mertes to pursue him. After catching the suspect and attempting to handcuff him, the suspect produced a handgun and shot Officer Mertes in the neck and under his arm.
Despite being mortally wounded, Officer Mertes managed to return fire and wound the suspect, who was later apprehended in the park.
The suspect, a 32-year-old man, was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. He remained incarcerated until his death on April 25, 2019. The park where Officer Mertes was killed was later renamed in his honor, becoming Carl W. Mertes Park. Officer Mertes had served with the North Miami Police Department for ten years and was survived by his wife, children, and step-children.
The incident surrounding Officer Mertes' death was thoroughly investigated, leading to the swift arrest and conviction of the suspect.
