Carl Wallace Mertes, a 41-year-old police officer with the North Miami Police Department, tragically lost his life on November 5, 1980. Officer Mertes was on patrol when he responded to a call to back up another officer who was making an arrest at a nearby park around 3 a.m. Upon arrival, the suspect fled, prompting Officer Mertes to pursue him.
