Richard Allen Boles, a 41-year-old police officer with the Metro-Dade Police Department, tragically lost his life on November 28, 1988, in Miami, Florida. Officer Boles, along with his partner Officer David Strzalkowski, responded to a disturbance call near a trailer park in the early hours of the morning. Upon arrival, they encountered Charles Harry Street, a convict who had been released from the Glades Correctional Institution just ten days prior.
A violent struggle ensued during which Street managed to seize Officer Boles' firearm. Street then shot Officer Strzalkowski three times, with the final shot to the head proving fatal. He subsequently shot Officer Boles three times, and after running out of ammunition, retrieved Officer Strzalkowski's gun to continue his assault. Street pursued the already wounded Officer Boles around his patrol car and delivered a final, fatal shot to his chest.
Following the murders, Charles Street attempted to flee the scene in the officers' patrol car but was eventually apprehended after a brief pursuit. Street was charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and armed burglary. In 1990, he was convicted and sentenced to death for the murders of Officers Boles and Strzalkowski. The trial court found several aggravating factors, including the heinous, atrocious, and cruel nature of the murders, as well as their cold, calculated, and premeditated execution.
Street's conviction and death sentence were upheld on appeal, despite numerous claims of trial errors. The case highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the severe consequences of violent crime. On April 19, 1995, while on death row, Charles Street was fatally stabbed by fellow inmates at the Florida State Penitentiary, bringing an end to his life and the legal proceedings surrounding his crimes.
