Kathryn Patterson McRae, a 70-year-old white female, was found dead on January 29, 1989, in her home in Graceville, Florida. She and her husband, Robert McRae, 72, were discovered in their kitchen, both having been shot once in the back of the head. Kathryn had been thumb-cuffed with her hands behind her back. Despite the presence of many valuables in the home, only money from Robert's wallet and a ring from Kathryn's hand were reported missing, leading investigators to rule out robbery as the
primary motive.
The case, known as the "McRae murders," has intrigued law enforcement for decades. Two ski masks found in the backyard were among the first pieces of evidence, suggesting a planned and executed crime. Over the years, hundreds of persons of interest have been considered, but no definitive suspects have been identified. Former Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen, who retired in 2016, has been volunteering his time to review the case.
