Deputy Sheriff Hugh Ellis Thomas Jr., a 24-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on March 28, 1989, in Seminole County, Florida. He was responding to a prowler call in a rural area near the intersection of Old Mims Road and Snow Hill Road. Upon arrival, Deputy Thomas was shot and killed by the suspect, who used a semi-automatic rifle. The suspect, who had recently been released from jail and was stalking his girlfriend, subsequently committed suicide at the scene.
