George Stefan DeSalvia, a 29-year-old police officer with the Orlando Police Department, tragically lost his life on February 3, 2000. Officer DeSalvia was shot and killed while assisting another officer during a traffic stop on John Young Parkway in Orlando, Florida. The incident occurred when the second officer had arrested one of the vehicle's occupants on an outstanding warrant.
As Officer DeSalvia and his colleague attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, the driver pulled out a .40 caliber Glock handgun and shot Officer DeSalvia in the head. The assailant then fired at the second officer, striking him multiple times and leaving him critically injured and paralyzed. Despite the severity of the situation, neither officer was able to return fire before the suspect fled the scene.
A massive manhunt ensued, involving several hundred police officers from various jurisdictions. The shooter was eventually apprehended a few hours later, hiding in a nearby abandoned house. A third occupant of the vehicle was also arrested in connection with the incident. The shooter, who was 21 years old at the time, was later found guilty of first-degree murder of a police officer and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on October 17, 2001. This tragic event marked the first time an Orlando police officer had been killed in the line of duty since 1976.
Officer DeSalvia had served with the Orlando Police Department for only eight months before his untimely death. He was a dedicated officer, remembered fondly by his colleagues and community. He left behind a wife and three young children. In honor of his service and sacrifice, a street where the police communications and training center is located was renamed "George DeSalvia Way" in 2012. The community continues to remember and honor Officer DeSalvia's legacy through various memorials and ceremonies.
