Sean Michael Maurice Taylor, a 24-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on November 27, 2007, in Miami, Florida. Taylor, a professional football player for the Washington Redskins, was at home recovering from a knee injury when intruders broke into his residence. The incident occurred in the early hours of November 26, 2007, while Taylor, his girlfriend Jackie Garcia, and their 18-month-old daughter were asleep.
Awakened by the noise, Taylor instructed Garcia to hide with their daughter and armed himself with a machete to confront the intruders. Unfortunately, one of the intruders shot Taylor in the upper thigh, severing his femoral artery. Despite being rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital and undergoing emergency surgery, Taylor succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The investigation into Taylor's death quickly led to the arrest of four men: Eric Rivera Jr., Jason Mitchell, Charles Wardlow, and Venjah Hunte. These individuals were identified as the perpetrators of the botched burglary that resulted in Taylor's death. Eric Rivera Jr., who was 17 at the time, was later convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 57 years in prison. Rivera was identified as the one who fired the fatal shot. Jason Mitchell, considered the mastermind behind the burglary, was convicted of first-degree felony murder and armed burglary, receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Venjah Hunte accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to 29 years in prison for his role in the crime. Charles Wardlow and another accomplice, Timothy Brown, were also charged and faced trials for their involvement.
