Armando Cortez, a 16-year-old from Bartow, Florida, tragically lost his life on December 24, 2007. Armando had just dropped off his girlfriend at the entrance of the venue and was parking his car behind the nearby Union Academy Magnet School when he was attacked by a group of individuals who mistakenly believed he was a member of a rival gang.
The group, consisting of about ten people, beat him with weapons, including baseball bats, before Jonathan Homesley, also 16, approached and shot Armando five times. Armando was not involved in any gang activities, and his death was a case of mistaken identity.
Jonathan Homesley, a 16-year-old from Tampa, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Armando's death. Homesley was identified as a member of the Hillsborough County gang Norte 14, which was unfamiliar to Bartow police until this incident. The gang, known for its association with the color red and symbols such as XIV, X4, 14, and 4-dots, originated in California in the late 1960s. Homesley had attended the Quinceañera but was not invited by the family hosting the event. The tension at the party escalated when a group of individuals, possibly associated with a rival gang, began rapping to a song played by the DJ, leading to an altercation that ultimately resulted in Armando's death.
The arrest of Homesley brought some relief to Armando's family, who were devastated by the loss. Emanuel Cortez, Armando's older brother, expressed that while it was good that the perpetrator was caught quickly, it was still incredibly difficult to cope with Armando's absence. The investigation revealed that the group who attacked Armando had been angered by their inability to confront the rival gang members at the party, leading them to mistakenly target Armando. The Bartow police, after interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence, obtained an arrest warrant for Homesley, who was subsequently found and arrested by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
