On December 10, 2014, Tracie Shiflet, a 41-year-old resident of Winter Park, Florida, tragically lost her life due to an accidental shooting. The incident occurred early in the morning at her residence on Gold Court. Deputies from the Seminole County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call made by Shiflet's adult son, who was asleep in the house at the time of the shooting. Upon arrival, they found Shiflet with a gunshot wound.
She was immediately transported to Winter Park Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed that Shiflet's long-term boyfriend, Edison Garcia-Muniz, was present at the scene. Garcia-Muniz, 33, had brought his firearm into the home and was handling it when it accidentally discharged, striking Shiflet in the upper body. Garcia-Muniz claimed he was unaware that the gun was loaded at the time. Despite his cooperation with the authorities, investigators determined that his negligence in handling the firearm directly led to Shiflet's death.
As a result, Garcia-Muniz was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He was held on a $10,000 bond. The case was classified as an accidental shooting, and there were no indications of foul play or premeditated intent. The arrest and subsequent charge of manslaughter underscored the serious consequences of negligent firearm handling, even in the absence of malicious intent. The incident left Shiflet's family and friends in deep mourning, as they struggled to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss of a beloved individual.
