Carlton Ashford, a 24-year-old resident of Orlando, Florida, tragically lost his life on April 25, 2015. The incident occurred during a house party in the Waterford Lakes area. According to reports, Ashford was attending the party with his girlfriend, who was the roommate of the host. The party, which had attracted around 60 guests through social media and mass text messages, took a dark turn when four strangers, appearing suspicious, arrived at the event.
Ashford, sensing potential trouble, decided to avoid any confrontation by retreating to the master bedroom upstairs to play Xbox.
As the night progressed, two of the strangers left the beer pong table and headed towards the front door, leading other guests to believe they had left the house. However, one of the strangers made his way upstairs and opened the master bedroom door, catching Ashford off guard. In a sudden and violent act, the intruder began shooting, striking Ashford multiple times. Despite being rushed to Florida Hospital East, Ashford was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
The investigation into Ashford's death led to the arrest of 18-year-old Jose Santiago, who was charged with second-degree murder. Santiago, who had a criminal record including arrests for grand theft of a firearm, burglary, and unlawful possession of prescription drugs, was apprehended by Orange County deputies and held without bond in the Orange County Jail. The arrest brought a measure of solace to Ashford's grieving mother, Yvette Pennant, who expressed relief that the perpetrator would no longer pose a threat to others.
In the aftermath of the shooting, it was revealed that residents in the Waterford Lakes neighborhood had made multiple calls to authorities complaining about the noise from the party. However, deputies did not respond until after the shooting occurred. This delay in response led Pennant to believe that her son's death could have been prevented if the party had been broken up earlier. Ashford's death not only highlighted the tragic consequences of violence but also raised questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement's response to community concerns.
