Matthew Jafari, a 19-year-old male from Orlando, Florida, tragically lost his life on December 19, 2017. The incident occurred at the Magnolia Court condos, where Matthew was fatally shot in the head. According to reports, Matthew was at the location to assist a friend, Sasmon Tavares, who was also injured during the incident. The suspect, Benjamin Heyward Jr., was arrested shortly after the shooting.
Heyward, who had previously been roommates with Tavares, had been involved in an argument with him, leading to the fatal encounter.
On the day of the incident, Heyward arrived at the meeting spot with two other men. He shook Matthew's hand before immediately shooting him in the head with a black semi-automatic handgun. Tavares, who was also present, was shot in the arm as he attempted to flee the scene. Heyward was later found inside a unit at the Magnolia Court condos and taken into custody. During his arrest, Heyward was also found in possession of methamphetamine and other contraband.
The case went to trial, where Heyward faced charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession of methamphetamine, and other related offenses. Despite the severity of the charges, Heyward was acquitted of the murder charge but was convicted of a lesser battery charge. This outcome left Matthew's family, particularly his mother Nancy Jafari, deeply disappointed and questioning the justice system. Nancy expressed her frustration, stating that the evidence presented in court clearly showed the wounds inflicted on her son, yet the jury's decision allowed Heyward to walk free on the murder charge.
