Schiharia Aila Sai Kiran, a 21-year-old graduate student from India, tragically lost his life on June 14, 2015, in Miami, Florida. Sai Kiran was outside his apartment building on SW Sixth Street, talking on his cellphone when he was confronted by a gunman who demanded his phone. When Sai Kiran resisted, the gunman shot him multiple times. Despite being rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center by Miami Fire Rescue, Sai Kiran succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.
The investigation into Sai Kiran's death led to significant developments three years later. In August 2018, two men, Brandon Figueroa and Jonathan Rivera-Gunera, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. According to the arrest reports, Figueroa and Rivera-Gunera had targeted Sai Kiran for a robbery. Figueroa confessed to detectives that they had planned the robbery, and when Sai Kiran resisted, a struggle ensued, leading to Rivera-Gunera shooting the victim. Rivera-Gunera, however, provided a slightly different account, stating that he had driven Figueroa to the location and ordered him to rob Sai Kiran, hearing gunshots while waiting in the car.
Both suspects were held without bond following their arrests. The case highlighted the dangers faced by international students and prompted a public plea for help from Sai Kiran's friends, who sought justice for their slain friend. The arrests brought some closure to the case, but the tragic loss of a young life pursuing academic dreams in a foreign country remained a poignant reminder of the senseless violence that can occur.
