Vernon Van Johnson, aged 27, was shot and killed on September 3, 2014, in Baltimore, Maryland. Known as "VJ" and "Smiley" to his friends and family, Johnson was remembered for his vibrant personality and warm demeanor. He was fatally attacked in the area of West Baltimore, adding to a series of violent incidents that contributed to the city’s already concerning homicide rate that year.
