Nu "Jenny" Dang, a 60-year-old Vietnamese immigrant, was tragically killed on September 15, 2015, while working at her family-owned dry cleaning business, Lake Mary Cleaners, in Lake Mary, Florida. Dang had moved to the United States from Vietnam in 1979 and had been a well-known and beloved member of the community for nearly three decades. On the day of the incident, Andre Ernesto Luciano, a 26-year-old man, entered the dry cleaning shop and requested to use the restroom.
When Dang refused, Luciano became enraged and shot her. He then tied her up using zip ties and left her in the bathroom, where she was later found by a customer.
Luciano's actions did not end there. After shooting Dang, he stole cash from the register and fled the scene in her car. He was later apprehended in Kissimmee, Florida, where he was found with Dang's vehicle. During the investigation, Luciano confessed to the crime, stating that he had initially bought the gun to kill himself but ended up using it to shoot Dang instead. He also admitted to his uncle and detectives that he had killed her, providing details about the shooting.
The legal proceedings that followed were swift. Luciano was indicted on charges of premeditated first-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping, and burglary. He pleaded guilty to these charges to avoid the death penalty, and in May 2016, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Luciano had no prior criminal history and had recently moved to central Florida from New York, where he had served in the U.S. Coast Guard and worked in legal services for the district attorney in the Bronx. His sudden and violent actions shocked the community and left many questioning how such a tragedy could occur.
