Helena Freja Ramsay, a 17-year-old female student, tragically lost her life on February 14, 2018, during a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Helena, who was of British descent, was in her Holocaust history class when the shooter opened fire. Known for her quiet demeanor and extraordinary kindness, Helena was a beloved member of her school community, participating in activities such as the First Priority Club and Model United Nations.
On that
fateful day, Helena was one of 17 victims who were killed in the attack. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, a former student of the school, was arrested shortly after the incident. Cruz had a history of behavioral issues and had been expelled from the school prior to the shooting. Following his arrest, Cruz faced multiple charges, including 17 counts of first-degree murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.
The legal proceedings against Cruz were highly publicized. In October 2021, Cruz pleaded guilty to all charges. The sentencing phase of his trial began in July 2022, where the jury was tasked with deciding whether he should receive the death penalty or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Ultimately, in November 2022, Cruz was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Helena's death, along with the deaths of her fellow students and teachers, sparked a nationwide movement for gun control. Survivors of the shooting, along with families of the victims, became vocal advocates for legislative changes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
