On a chilly December afternoon, just days before Christmas in 2014, a family was preparing for some last-minute holiday shopping. This festive season, however, would be forever marred by a senseless act of violence. Deonta Julius, a 31-year-old Black man, was walking along Ravenwood Avenue in Northeast Baltimore when his life was abruptly cut short. He was just a short distance from his grandmother's home when an unknown individual approached and shot him.
