Ricardo Vaca, a 20-year-old resident of Lehigh Acres, Florida, tragically lost his life on June 18, 2016. The incident occurred when Vaca attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute between his neighbors, Placido Moreno-Torres and Amparo Moreno. According to reports, Vaca, who had recently married and was expecting a child, heard the argument and went to the Moreno-Torres' driveway to help. Unfortunately, his act of kindness led to his untimely death.
Placido Moreno-Torres, in a fit of rage, shot and killed both his wife and Vaca before fleeing the scene on foot. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office quickly identified Placido Moreno-Torres as the primary suspect. He was apprehended the following day, hiding in the backyard of another home. Moreno-Torres was charged with two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm and one count of attempted second-degree murder. During the trial, witnesses recounted the harrowing events of that night, including how Vaca's sister witnessed the shooting and narrowly escaped with her life when Moreno-Torres' gun misfired as he aimed it at her.
The legal proceedings culminated in January 2018, when Placido Moreno-Torres was found guilty of the charges against him. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders and an additional 30 years for the attempted murder charge. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the bravery of individuals like Ricardo Vaca, who lost his life trying to protect others. The Vaca family, along with the community, mourned the loss of a young man described as kind-hearted and always willing to help others.
