Katelyn Butler, a 14-year-old resident of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, tragically lost her life on October 25, 2016, in a harrowing incident that shocked the local community. Katelyn, along with her mother, Catrina Butler, and her 20-year-old brother, Jeremy Butler, were victims of a brutal murder-suicide orchestrated by her father, William Butler. The Fort Walton Beach Police Department determined that William Butler killed his wife and two of his children before taking his own life. Catrina Butler died from multiple stab wounds, while Katelyn and Jeremy were shot to death. William Butler subsequently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Several weapons, including a knife and a shotgun, were found inside the home.
The tragedy unfolded early in the morning at the Butler family's residence on Pryor Road. Police responded to a domestic violence report at 5:45 a.m. and discovered the bodies inside the home. A fifth family member, a 17-year-old boy, managed to escape the house and sought help from a neighbor, who then called 911. The boy reported hearing screaming and yelling before fleeing the scene. Upon arrival, police officers found the bodies and made a forced entry into the residence.
The investigation revealed a history of domestic abuse within the Butler household. Police reports indicated that William Butler had been abusive and erratic, causing fear among his family members. In May 2016, Katelyn had told investigators that her father took her mother's keys, accusing her of drug use and devil worship. Katelyn also expressed anxiety over her parents' constant fighting and had been cutting herself, leading to her being Baker Acted. Police were called to the house again a month later after Katelyn texted a teacher about wanting to harm herself. Earlier reports dating back to December 2013 also documented instances of child abuse and domestic violence involving William Butler.
The community was deeply affected by the loss of Katelyn, who was a freshman at Choctawhatchee High School. She was remembered as a bright and involved student, excelling in International Baccalaureate classes and participating in the school's robotics team. Grief counselors were made available to students and staff to help them cope with the tragedy. The school community came together to support one another, with teachers and friends sharing fond memories of Katelyn.
