Clayton Vernon Lowery, a 27-year-old African American man from Lake Helen, Florida, tragically lost his life on November 26, 2016, in DeLand, Florida. The incident occurred in the Candlelight Oaks neighborhood, where a minor traffic mishap escalated into a deadly shooting. Lowery's vehicle was struck by another car, leading to an argument that quickly turned violent. During the altercation, gunfire erupted, resulting in Lowery being shot seven times, six of which were in the back.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting also claimed the life of Victor Small, a 41-year-old bystander from DeLand, who was struck by a fatal shot to the back while standing in a nearby yard. Additionally, Sam Parker III, 28, was wounded in the leg but survived the incident.
Following the investigation, two men were arrested and charged in connection with the shootings. Charlie Martin IV, 22, of DeLand, and Jevon L. Dennis, 25, of Deltona, were both sentenced to 15 years in prison for their roles in the murders. Martin pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder, while Dennis pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. Both men must serve at least 10 years of their sentences before becoming eligible for any gain time, which could reduce their remaining sentences. Upon release, they will each serve four years of probation.
The tragic event unfolded near a large house party attended by about 100 people. The DeLand Police Department's investigation revealed that 14 shell casings were found at the scene, indicating the intensity of the gunfire exchange. The incident left the community in shock and mourning, as it highlighted the devastating consequences of escalating violence from seemingly minor disputes.
