Curtisia "Courtney" Smith, a 26-year-old woman from Boynton Beach, Florida, was tragically shot on April 5, 2017, outside the Z Food and Meat Market on North Seacrest Boulevard. She succumbed to her injuries 12 days later at Delray Beach Medical Center. Courtney's death was the result of a targeted attack, as she was shot multiple times at point-blank range in the chest, neck, and legs. Surveillance footage from the convenience store captured the harrowing incident, showing a man with a concealed face firing the shots. This footage also revealed another man, later identified as Roderick Taylor, conversing with the shooter just minutes before the attack and fleeing the scene together afterward.
Courtney had been living in fear for months leading up to her death, having faced harassment, threats, and violence. She had even filed a restraining order against a woman who had sent her death threats and whose family had attacked her. Despite these measures, the threats persisted, culminating in the fatal shooting. On the day of the incident, Courtney was lured out of her home under the pretense of meeting friends and waiting for pizza, only to be ambushed and shot.
The investigation into Courtney's murder has been fraught with challenges. Initially, Roderick Taylor was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm as a felon. However, in 2020, Taylor accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and agreeing to testify against any other individuals involved in the case. As a result, the second-degree murder charges against him were dropped. Another man was also arrested on first-degree murder charges based on witness testimonies, but these charges were quickly dropped after evidence surfaced that ruled him out as the shooter.
Courtney's mother, Jacqualine Smith, has been relentless in her pursuit of justice for her daughter. She has continuously appealed to the community for information and has even offered a substantial reward for any leads that could result in a conviction. Despite these efforts, the case remains unsolved, and the person responsible for Courtney's death has not been brought to justice.
