Kathy L. Edwards, aged 53, tragically passed away on April 27, 2017, in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide incident in Saint Augustine, Florida. The incident occurred at The Oaks of Wildwood apartment complex on Carter Road. Kathy was found deceased inside her apartment, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Her husband, James D. Edwards, aged 57, was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound and was initially thought to be dead.
However, he showed faint signs of life and was transported to Flagler Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The couple had a tumultuous relationship, marked by a history of domestic violence. Kathy had filed for divorce in 2016 and had recently obtained an injunction for protection against James, which was granted on April 19, 2017. This injunction prohibited James from coming within 500 feet of Kathy's residence. Despite this legal protection, the tragic events unfolded just days later. Kathy had detailed an abusive relationship in her petition for the injunction, citing instances of harassment and threats from James. She mentioned that James had a gun and had made ominous statements about not using it "yet."

The investigation quickly pointed to a murder-suicide, with James believed to have shot Kathy before turning the gun on himself.
