Jake Castillo, a 17-year-old from Lakeland, Florida, tragically lost his life on July 3, 2017, in a drive-by shooting. Jake had been paralyzed since 2011 due to a previous drive-by shooting that also claimed the life of his older brother, Juan Castillo.
On the evening of his death, three Hispanic males in a cream-colored Cadillac drove past Jake's residence multiple times before one of them opened fire, resulting in Jake's fatal injuries. The shooting was believed to be gang-related, according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was part of a larger altercation between rival gangs. Earlier that day, an argument had taken place at a Lakeland gas station between Dario Trejo and John Moises Lugo, both of whom were involved in the subsequent drive-by shooting. Trejo, who was driving the Cadillac, returned fire after being shot in the arm by Lugo. This exchange of gunfire led to Jake Castillo being struck and killed while inside his home. Trejo and another passenger, Jose Tinoco, were also injured in the shootout.
Legal proceedings followed the tragic event. Dario Trejo was charged with manslaughter with a firearm and, in a plea agreement, was sentenced to eight years in prison. The charge was reduced from a potential 10-year minimum sentence due to mitigating factors, including Trejo's claim that he was returning fire in self-defense. John Moises Lugo faced manslaughter charges as well, with a pretrial conference scheduled for September 3, 2019. If convicted, Lugo could face up to 30 years in prison.
