The shooting was a result of a retaliatory act by 37-year-old Taheed Kyrue Stoner. Stoner's girlfriend, Vaneesha Natia Kent, had been shot in the hand while driving past the Thomas Street home the previous evening. Believing the shots came from that residence, Stoner sought revenge. On the morning of July 4, Stoner was seen by police shooting into the house on Thomas Street. He fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by Fort Myers police officers. Stoner was charged with the murder of Dewayne Johnson and the attempted murder of Dwayne Broughton.
