In the winter of 2018, the story of a Baltimore man, who had once been the focus of a city-wide manhunt, came to a violent and abrupt end. Antonio Wright, a 26-year-old Black or African American male, was fatally shot on the morning of December 14, 2018. The shooting occurred in East Baltimore, where Wright was found near the intersection of Biddle and Bond streets. Another 26-year-old man was also injured in the incident but survived.
At the time of his death, reports varied on his age, with some stating he was 27.
Wright’s death was not an isolated event but rather the final chapter in a saga that had played out publicly in the preceding months. Earlier the same year, he had been acquitted of murder and arson charges in a high-profile case that had captivated and divided the city. In March 2017, Wright was accused of throwing Molotov cocktails into a home, an act that resulted in the tragic deaths of two teenagers, 19-year-old Shi-heem Sholto and 17-year-old Tyrone James, and injured six others. The Baltimore police had labeled Wright 'Public Enemy No. 1' following the firebombing. Despite the serious accusations, Wright maintained his innocence, even livestreaming his surrender to police on Facebook to proclaim that he did not commit the crime. He was ultimately found not guilty of all charges related to the firebombing in June 2018.
Following his acquittal, Wright's attorney, Warren Brown, had advised him to leave the Baltimore area, a piece of advice that went unheeded. Brown would later describe his former client's death as 'another casualty in the war on each other,' alluding to the cycle of violence that plagues the city. The motive for the firebombing Wright was accused of was believed to be retaliation for a prior shooting.
