In the summer of 2020, the life of 32-year-old Tavonte Briggs was cut short in a burst of gunfire on a Baltimore street. On the afternoon of July 25th, police were called to the 300 block of South Franklintown Road where they discovered Briggs suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The male victim's death was the result of a violent encounter that began during a dice game.
Investigations into the shooting revealed a narrative of retaliation. The man identified and arrested for the murder was 23-year-old Danjuan McBride. According to prosecutors, McBride targeted Briggs in an act of revenge, believing Briggs was involved in the killing of his uncle years prior. During the dice game, McBride reportedly appeared and began shooting at Briggs, who then fled. McBride pursued him, continuing to fire until Briggs collapsed.
The case against Danjuan McBride was built on significant testimony, including compelling and emotional accounts from his own family. Both McBride's mother and stepmother testified that he had confessed to the killing. Following his arrest in August 2020, McBride was charged with first-degree murder. In March 2022, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, use of a firearm during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm with a prior felony conviction. Subsequently, in June 2022, a judge sentenced McBride to life in prison, bringing a measure of closure to the violent death of Tavonte Briggs.
