On a November evening in 2019, Jordan Taylor, a 31-year-old man, was at his home on Clifton Avenue in Baltimore with his wife. Their evening was shattered when they heard someone attempting to break in. Taylor rushed to the door, trying to barricade it with his own body to protect his wife as the intruders tried to force their way in with a crowbar. The assailants then opened fire through the door, striking Taylor multiple times.
He was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The intruders, who had targeted the wrong house, briefly entered the home demanding to know the location of a safe that did not exist before fleeing.
The investigation into the senseless killing of the beloved Catonsville Y coach led authorities to identify four individuals connected to the crime. Investigators utilized DNA evidence from a stolen vehicle used by the suspects, as well as cell phone data, to track down those involved. The suspects were identified as Aaron Butler, Kahlil Madden, Donta Holdclaw, and Elease Frazier. Over the course of the investigation, arrests were made, bringing some measure of hope for justice to a grieving community.
The legal process that followed saw a series of developments. Before his case could go to trial, one of the suspects, Donta Holdclaw, passed away. Charges against another suspect, Elease Frazier, were eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence. Aaron Butler ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, attempted armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit burglary. Kahlil Madden was found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit burglary.
In September 2023, the sentencing for the two convicted men brought a close to the lengthy court proceedings. Aaron Butler was sentenced to life in prison with all but 35 years suspended, to be followed by five years of supervised probation. During the sentencing, Butler offered an apology to Taylor's family. Kahlil Madden received a 40-year prison sentence. The courtroom was filled with emotion as Taylor's loved ones shared victim impact statements, expressing the profound and lasting pain of their loss. It was also revealed in court that Madden was facing charges for the alleged murder of a fellow inmate while incarcerated for Taylor's death.
