Vontay Eugene Silas, a 26-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on November 11, 2017, in Leesburg, Florida. The incident occurred around 12:17 a.m. at the intersection of Washington Street and East Street. Upon arrival, Leesburg Police Department officers found Silas lying unresponsive in the middle of the intersection. He had been shot four times and was pronounced dead at Leesburg Regional Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that the motive behind the shooting was related to a financial dispute. An eyewitness, who was familiar with both Silas and the suspect, Steven A. Hammonds, provided crucial testimony. According to the witness, Hammonds, a 29-year-old male with a history of felony convictions, arrived at the scene in a family van. He confronted Silas about money he claimed Silas owed him. When Silas denied owing any money, Hammonds drew a black semi-automatic handgun and shot Silas four times.
Hammonds, who has ten previous felony convictions, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was held without bail at the Lake County Jail. The arrest provided some level of closure for Silas's family, as expressed by Leesburg police Lt. Joe Iozzi. Hammonds's criminal history includes charges of aggravated battery, fraud, resisting arrest, burglary, and theft. He had previously served prison terms for carrying a concealed firearm as a felon and for burglary.
The case highlights the tragic consequences of unresolved disputes and the impact of gun violence on communities. The swift action by the Leesburg Police Department and the cooperation of eyewitnesses were crucial in bringing the suspect to justice and providing some measure of solace to the victim's family.
