Priscilla Torres, a 19-year-old student at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, was tragically murdered on February 10, 2018. Torres was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the area of NW 29th Avenue and 12th Street in Miami. She was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center by Miami Fire Rescue, where she was pronounced dead. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, and a witness reported hearing a woman scream followed by gunshots.
The witness also saw a dark-colored vehicle circling the victim and firing additional shots before fleeing the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of 18-year-old Jaime Luis Placencia, who was charged with first-degree murder. Surveillance footage showed Placencia arriving at Torres' dorm room at 2:34 a.m. on the day of the murder. The two were seen leaving together at 3:50 a.m., and Torres' body was discovered around 4:30 a.m. Placencia initially denied seeing Torres since January and attempted to conceal a burn on his hand, which he claimed was from working on a food truck. However, further investigation revealed inconsistencies in his statements and linked him to the crime scene through cellphone records and the victim's Sunpass data.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but the evidence against Placencia was substantial. Torres' car, a white Nissan Sentra, was found engulfed in flames in Miami Gardens three days after her murder. Placencia's cellphone records indicated he was in the vicinity of the car at the time it was set on fire. Friends and classmates of Torres identified Placencia as someone she was close to, which further implicated him in the crime.
The case garnered significant attention, and Barry University expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their student. The university offered counseling services to students and staff affected by the tragedy. The legal proceedings against Placencia continued as the community mourned the untimely death of Priscilla Torres, a young woman with a promising future ahead of her.
