Anthony Bell, a 26-year-old resident of Tallahassee, Florida, tragically lost his life on January 6, 2019, in a violent incident that stemmed from a drug deal gone wrong. On that fateful day, Bell was found dead inside his Chevrolet Malibu at the Greystone Place Apartments on Jackson Bluff Road. The vehicle was discovered against a metal fence, still in drive, with both the driver and passenger doors open.
Inside the car, officers found marijuana, indicating Bell's involvement in drug transactions. According to witnesses, Bell was known to sell drugs, which was his primary source of income.
The events leading to Bell's death began when he arranged to meet Darius Phillips, also 26, to sell marijuana. Initially, the meeting was supposed to take place at a Wendy's on West Pensacola Street, but Phillips changed the location to the apartment complex. Upon arrival, Phillips approached Bell's car and, after being told there was no room for him to sit in the back seat, walked around to the driver's side door and shot Bell in the left temple with a revolver. Phillips then turned the gun on another victim in the car, who managed to escape and call 911. Surveillance footage captured Phillips firing the shots and fleeing the scene in a silver Hyundai Sonata.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Darius Phillips. He was apprehended at his workplace, a Burger King, and charged with murder, attempted murder, and robbery with a firearm. During a search of Phillips' residence, police found a .38 revolver, blood-stained shoes, and a backpack, all of which were linked to the crime. Phillips refused to cooperate with investigators, but evidence from phone records and witness testimonies solidified the case against him. The autopsy confirmed that Bell died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
