Eric Jimenez Munoz, an 18-year-old from Fort Pierce, Florida, tragically lost his life on February 22, 2019. He was found lying in the road on East Joy Lane with a gunshot wound in his upper back. Emergency responders attempted to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The investigation revealed that Munoz had been in his car, a silver Nissan Altima, with two brothers, Daniel and Joel Martinez, aged 17 and 15 respectively.
An argument ensued, during which Daniel Martinez, armed with a shotgun, shot Munoz in the back.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office quickly apprehended the Martinez brothers, who lived in the same neighborhood where the incident occurred. Both brothers were charged as adults with first-degree murder and robbery with a deadly weapon. Daniel Martinez admitted to the shooting, stating that he had intended to rob Munoz of marijuana. He claimed that his younger brother, Joel, had no involvement in the crime, although evidence later suggested otherwise. The brothers were held without bond at the Department of Juvenile Justice.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Daniel Martinez was sentenced to life in prison after pleading no contest to first-degree murder with a firearm, robbery with a firearm, and attempted robbery with a firearm. Joel Martinez, who initially faced a first-degree murder charge, entered a no contest plea to robbery with a firearm and attempted robbery with a firearm. He was sentenced to approximately three and a half years in prison, which he had already served while awaiting trial, followed by 15 years of probation.
The case also involved the arrest of Cristian Pozos, who was charged with furnishing a minor with a firearm. Pozos had sold the double-barreled shotgun used in the shooting to the Martinez brothers. This tragic incident highlighted the dangers of firearms in the hands of minors and the severe consequences of violent crime.
